Kilburn director in careers advice spotlight
A director from Kilburn has become an industry ambassador. Taking centre stage to raise awareness of the building materials sector and it’s opportunities.
Bart Murphy, Operations Director from MP Moran Builders and Plumbers Merchants, has been appointed an Industry Ambassador by trade body, the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF). Bart will be spreading the word about the building materials sector careers. Despite the industry’s scope and scale, it is often under the radar when considering career options.
Bart is already a trailblazer for the industry after winning the Young Merchant of the Year in 2016.
In his new role as a BMF Ambassador, Bart will help raise awareness of the opportunities to be had in both builders’ merchants and materials suppliers.
As part of the initiative, Bart appears on the new Building Materials Careers website. The website includes information on the qualifications and career routes available, including apprenticeships, diplomas and foundation degrees. Highlighting the diverse roles including HR, finance, driving, engineering, design, warehouse and storage, as well as sales and marketing.
“I am really proud to be appointed as a BMF Industry Ambassador and extremely passionate and dedicated about getting young people into our industry.
“I have worked at MP Moran since June 2000, starting out in a part time role while studying. Since then I have been given every opportunity to progress and reach my potential.
“In 2017, I became Operations Director. I now oversee seven outlets, covering London and the surrounding areas into Hertfordshire, as well as in Ireland too.
“That includes large ecommerce platforms and more than 300 staff. There are many different disciplines from transport and logistics, sales, warehousing and distribution, marketing, finance, IT, health and safety and HR.
“I want to create awareness about our industry. Make young people aware of what a fantastic starting point the merchant industry is and highlight the opportunities available. This industry has great alternatives to more traditional channels of further education.
John Newcomb, CEO of the BMF said: “Bart is absolute proof of how far people with the right attitude and determination can go in our industry.
“Our ambassador programme sees people from the ranks of the Federation’s membership help to promote the opportunities offered by the industry to students and job seekers, and Bart’s story is a great one to share.
“Bart has taken on a hugely important role. We are delighted he is on board supporting the initiative.”
